Shaz’s Lenten Challenge (a post from Shaz)

with 2 comments

Hi, all my wonderful family and friends!

Some of my friends and I have been talking about giving up or doing something for lent. Lucas has decided to not wear shoes (you’ll have to discuss the reasons with him, all I know it we won’t be going to the movies or any nice restaurants for a while.

I looked at the IDEAL impact I wanted to have on the earth and the REAL impact I have on the earth and saw a massive discrepancy. Mostly because I have no idea what I should or should not buy or should or should not do! So for lent I have decided to research and change ONE or TWO things about my life each week in order to ‘tread a little lighter on the earth.’

But why keep my research to myself. I thought I’d share my finding with you all in the hope that you would join me in stewarding the earth a little better. Here is week 1 -

WEEK 1 – THE EASY PEASY OPTION…

Inside my tummy right NOW I am growing a baby! Researching information on the environmental cost of buying extra-soft, quilted and multi-ply toilet paper from virgin wood has shocked me. I am was amazing that using unrecycled toilet paper on our backsides has a worse ecological footprint than driving around in a hummer for 12 months!

A quote from The Guardian states that “future generations are going to look at the way we make toilet paper as one of the greatest excesses of our age.” Now I know this I don’t want my children to ask me why I didn’t care.

Making toilet paper has a significant impact because of chemicals used in pulp manufacture and cutting down forests. On top of this did you know that buying unrecycled toilet paper from ‘plantations’ usually means it comes from overseas. More specifically from paper plantations in third world countries where large companies like Kleenex have moved poor farmers off the land to create the plantations used to make a product we wipe our backsides with!

My Mum used to tell me stories about having to use squares of newspaper instead of toilet paper. When did we get so soft? Toughen up! And to make things even easier I have found one of the best toilet paper products on the market for you to buy next time you are at the shops.

YOU MUST HAVE SEEN THIS IN YOUR SUPERMARKET!

Safe Toilet Tissue and the other items in the Safe range are the only tissue products endorsed by Planet Ark.  Safe products are available from Coles, Woolworths, Supa IGA, Spar and other leading supermarkets and convenience stores.

What’s so good about Safe Toilet Tissue?

Safe Toilet Tissue:

  • Is made from 100% recycled paper
  • Is biodegradable
  • Is not re-bleached
  • Is Australian made and owned in fact it is made and packaged in MELBOURNE so cuts down carbon transport costs.
  • Helps raise funds for Planet Ark’s campaigns.

  1. Thank you for that fabulous information. I will now be much more informed in my toilet paper choices. Convincing Andrew may not be as easy though!
